【GMBA】Insights into TSMC’s Innovations: Strategies for Global Leadership and Organizational Excellence

On November 22, 2024, we invited Jason Wang, Director of the Advanced Packaging Supply Chain Division at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), shared invaluable insights into the company’s innovative strategies and organizational management practices. As the world’s leading semiconductor foundry, TSMC is recognized for its cutting-edge technology and effective business strategies.

Wang’s presentation was divided into two key segments. The first focused on operational challenges, where he discussed issues such as cultural differences, regulatory complexities, and logistical hurdles. He highlighted the Arizona factory project as a prime example of how TSMC navigates labor shortages and unfamiliar construction practices while aligning with its corporate culture. Additionally, he introduced TSMC’s signature products and outlined the company’s future technology goals.

A significant aspect of Wang’s talk was TSMC’s integration of artificial intelligence to enhance manufacturing processes and supply chain management. With AI-driven defect detection, predictive analytics, and supplier risk monitoring, TSMC ensures operational efficiency and resilience in a dynamic global environment. He emphasized that TSMC is committed not only to technological advancement but also to social and environmental responsibility, incorporating ESG principles into its strategic initiatives.

Wang also addressed the complexities of internal communication as the company scales. He underscored the importance of organizational transformation, focusing on structure, communication, and adaptability. TSMC’s “Business Process Integration Division” (BPID) exemplifies its approach to optimization, integrating process improvements and knowledge sharing to achieve measurable outcomes.

Furthermore, he discussed the need for tailored leadership styles that prioritize accountability, transparency, and trust. TSMC’s adherence to its core values—integrity, innovation, and customer trust—supports its consistent performance across global operations.

As TSMC expands internationally, the company faces challenges in transferring its organizational culture to new regions. To address this, it emphasizes standardized training and processes while allowing for local autonomy.
